Always a popular favourite, this evergreen musical based on Green Grow the Lilacs never fails to please. Being transported to the warm plains of Oklahoma was just what one needed and the Company came up trumps with this enthusiastic production.
Heading the cast, Caroline Ward was perfectly cast as Aunt Eller. She characterized every mood of this lovable, funny and yet sympathetic character demonstrating Aunt Eller’s strong character in the auction scene and throughout the production as a whole. Steven Blankley coped well with the role of Curly, a believable Cowboy; his singing was spot on in all situations. Juliet Berrigan never fails to please, giving us an excellent Laurey, and extracting the tender moments in her singing, yet holding her own in Many A New Day. John Bamber hit the right notes as Will Parker – liked his Kansas City whilst Val Bamber shone as Ado Annie, receiving much appreciation from the audience. Brilliant performance from Stuart Innes as Ali Hakim, ducking and diving throughout. Lovely contribution from Jaimee Blakeley as Gertie Cummings with the ‘incredible laugh’. The role of Jud Fry was in the hands of experienced perfomer Mark Little whose Lonely Room was a triumph, together with his duet with Curly, Poor Jud is Dead.
The chorus were well drilled and delivered each of their tasks with gusto, nice contribution from the children. I must mention the Ballet, which to me was incredible for such a small stage – full, marks to Choreographer and lighting, this scene was beautifully staged and executed. I would liked to have heard a little more harmony, especially in Many A New Day, and a few ribbons and bows for the Ladies, Nevertheless a wonderful evening playing to well deserved packed houses.
